Catalog description

A study of the design and implementation of intelligent computer systems that can learn, plan, and solve problems autonomously. In addition to examining techniques for designing intelligent software agents, students investigate the social, political, and ethical implications of intelligent systems. Through hands-on activities that often require teamwork, students explore the application of artificial intelligence methods including search, knowledge representation, reasoning under uncertainty, and agentic AI systems that plan, use tools, and coordinate with one another. During a weekly laboratory session, students use industry-grade technology to complete projects, reporting on their results through both written documents and oral presentations.

Prerequisite: CMPSC 101 or CMPSC 102. Distribution requirements: QR (Quantitative Reasoning), SP (Scientific Process).

Course learning outcomes

Students who earn a C or better in this course will achieve the following objectives:

  1. Correctly implement an intelligent agent and accurately describe its properties.
  2. Correctly apply search algorithms to solve an agent-based problem.
  3. Design, implement, and assess an intelligent system for various artificial intelligence applications.
  4. Correctly explain and justify how a problem could be solved through the use of supervised, unsupervised, and/or reinforcement machine learning algorithms.
  5. Evaluate intelligent systems while considering their social, political, and ethical implications and communicate their outcomes in both written and oral forms.

Distribution learning outcomes

Quantitative Reasoning (QR): Students who successfully complete this requirement will demonstrate an understanding of how to interpret numeric data and/or their graphical or symbolic representations.

Scientific Process & Knowledge (SP): Students who successfully complete this requirement will demonstrate an understanding of the nature, approaches, and domain of scientific inquiry.

Required materials

A department-approved laptop, with an adequate charge, is required every class session. Requirements and the loaner-laptop request form are available on the CIS laptop requirements page.

There is no physical textbook. Readings and resources are distributed in class or linked from the course site as the term proceeds.

This course relies on this GitHub and Discord for assignment distribution, version control, and course communication. You are expected to have active accounts on both throughout the semester.

Grading

Final grades are based on 100 points, distributed as follows:

Category Points Detail
Projects 40 Search & Games (10, team), Agentic Tool-Use & Memory (14, individual), and the Final Capstone (16, your choice). Each includes a presentation, a code review, and a written reflection.
Challenges 27 Nine short coding exercises (3 points each), one per major concept. Each includes a brief written reflection and a short verbal check on your code.
Concept checkpoints 18 Three short individual check-ins on core material (6 points each).
Briefings 15 Five group briefings (3 points each) reporting back to the class on a theme.

Code reviews and verbal checks

Writing code that works is not the same as understanding it, so both are assessed. Each of the three projects includes a code review: you walk through your own code, explain the decisions you made, and respond to questions about it. Each challenge includes a shorter verbal check during lab, where you answer questions about your submitted code without referring to it.

This applies regardless of what tools you used to write the code. See the AI policy below.

Attendance

This course follows the CIS department's attendance policy: as a general guideline, you cannot miss more than two weeks of class in total during the semester without a letter-grade reduction. For this course specifically, that means no more than 6 sessions (counting both lecture and lab meetings, this course meets three times a week: Tuesday lecture, Tuesday lab, and Thursday lecture). Being marked late to class three times counts as one absence.

You have two tokens this semester, each usable for a one-week extension or resubmission on an eligible assignment. See the CIS department policies page for the full late-work system.

Extra credit

No extra credit is offered in this course. If you want to improve a grade on an eligible assignment, use one of your tokens to resubmit it (see Tokens & late work above).

Artificial intelligence in this course

This is a course about how AI systems work, so thoughtful use of AI tools is part of the subject matter, not something to avoid. That said, using an AI tool well means understanding what it produced: you are expected to be able to explain and defend any AI-assisted work, in writing and verbally. Cite the tool and describe how you used it. This is what the department means by being responsible: honoring commitments and taking responsibility for your own outcomes.

Policies

Midterm grades

Midterm grades will be submitted for all students in this course by Monday, October 19, 2026, but will not appear on academic transcripts. They offer an early indication of your performance so you can make adjustments if needed before the end of the term.

Experienced peer writing and speaking consultants help writers and speakers make academically responsible choices and determine strategies for effective communication at any stage in the writing or speaking process, for assignments in any discipline. Gator Day, Declaration Day, and Scholar Symposium

In each semester, we have at least one day set aside for programming, with no classes. Fall Gator Day is held on the first Tuesday in November. For Fall 2026 this is the All-College Programming Day, Tuesday November 3 (this course does not meet that day). Spring Declaration Day is held on a Monday in early April. Additionally, in the Spring, during the Richard J Cook – Teresa M Lahti Scholars Symposium, we gather to celebrate student research, scholarship, and creative activities on campus. All students are encouraged to participate.

Class Deans

The Office of Class Deans in Pelletier Library serves as a place for students to begin seeking assistance and answers to their questions related to college life. Recording policy

Audio, video, or cell phone recording of any class is prohibited unless prior written permission of the instructor has been obtained and all students and guest speakers have been informed recording may occur (or the recording is an approved educational accommodation). Allegheny College has a student-run Honor Code designed to promote individual responsibility and integrity in academic affairs. All students and faculty are bound by it. Given the shareable nature of code, the CIS department adds: thoughtful discussion of the principles underlying a problem is encouraged, but all submitted assignments must be the original work of the student submitting them, signed in accordance with the Honor Code. Religious observance

Students whose religious observances conflict with scheduled class meetings or final examinations are responsible for notifying the instructor in advance to arrange a reasonable accommodation.
